1950 Press Release:
Group's Climb Shows Perserverance Pays Off
NEW YORK, Feb. 11-The Shadows, new quartet sensation currently riding hot via their rendition of "I've Been a Fool" on the Lee label, have been set for their first big theater date at the Paradise, Detroit, Feb.17. The group, which has been casting their talent about for several seasons, had to endure many hardships before eventually finding the road to success. Jasper Edwards came to the group from a garbage truck route in Connecticut. Scott King, lead voice, was just one step from the relief roles after a long layoff. The same was true of Sam McClure. Ray Reed [sic] was formerly employed washing cars.

Their big break came one night when they were heard by Ed Levy, a former army major who served in World War II. Levy was so excited by the Shadows that he tossed aside all his post-war plans and jumped right into the record business.

Despite the wonderful sounds the group gets out of their songs such as "I've Been a Fool" and "You Are Closer to My Heart Than My Shadow," the Shadows have until now just missed hitting the proper stride with the public. With booking agent Joe Glaser and others becoming more interested, however, the Shadows may yet prove to be the biggest thing heard since Bill Kenny and his Ink Spots crew nudged "If I Didn't Care" into the hearts of the nation.
