"The Girl In My Dreams"/"I Wanna Know Why"
by The Cliques
on Modern 987
released in 1956
Above: The Cliques consisted of the duo Jesse Belvin (L) and Eugene Church (R). They both had subsequent success as "solo" artists, although usually with vocal group backing.
Trade Magazine Article (April 1956):
Looks like Modern Records has another big act in a new group recently signed, the Cliques. First wax effort by the lads, "The Girl in My Dreams," is getting great jockey reaction and is taking off nationally. Modern also has another new group, the Phantoms, who cut their first wax last week....
Above: Label image for Modern 987. This is the first of two records they had released on Modern, both in 1956. It was a good-sized hit for them. There were a few more collaborations, including Eugene Church on Specialty 604 (1957) backed up by Jesse Belvin, Gaynel Hodge and Alex Hodge, as well as The Saxons on Contender 1313 (1957) and The Fellows on Class 235 (1958).
